“They turned 18 and what was going on in her life… was all over the news,” she says. “They would follow us shopping and we would almost get into car accidents because of the paparazzi, and I didn’t want to be a part of it. I just thought, ‘This is such bullsh*t.’”More flix of the sisters under the break...
Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen - designer-duo behind The Row and Elizabeth and James - presented a mature and progressive collection of structured tailoring, embellished oriental pieces and sweeping silk silhouettes for their S/S 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week. But hot on the heels of such a well-seasoned ensemble, the designers have today been announced as the new creative heads of Alexa Chung favourite, Italian footwear brand Superga. By all accounts, the Olsens are stepping into some substantially demanding shoes as parent company, Steve Madden Ltd, has hopes to quadruple last year's sales figures. The initiative with the Olsens will see the collaborative launch of a luxury S/S 2012 sneaker collection co-branded with The Row. Ashley Olsen told WWD, "I really don’t think there's anything like this brand. It's a tennis-shoe brand with 100 years under its belt. [It] just needs to start off in the right stores and be on the right people's feet." And with Alexa already on board, no doubt a slew of taste-makers will follow. The Olsen Twins...sneaker designers? I'm with it!!! Talk about CHIC! I'm already excited....
“I think it’s really taught me a little bit more about myself and how I can be more affectionate and loving,” Mary-Kate says. “And how putting a smile on a kid’s face is … well, there’s nothing like it.” Adds Ashley, “The children are so special, kind, they’re loving, welcoming and they’re just incredible.”Although I despise TOMS shoes, this is such a great cause. Just precious!
“With the retailers, we dealt with some tough cookies. Their attitude was, ‘Who do these girls think they are?’” Mary-Kate added, “It definitely took time to earn people’s respect.”More flix under the break....
Still, how have they pulled any of this off without a formal design education? “Fair question,” replies Ashley, “but Dualstar started when we were six. And we had a collection with Walmart at twelve, which was the upper tier of the tween market. It was before celebrity designers.” “And we were really designing it,” adds Mary-Kate. “It would be jeans, a bit bohemian, or with a little blazer. It was really fashion-forward.”
The girls took control of the company built on their childhood earnings in TV and movies on their eighteenth birthday, when they bought out the former owners, took a hiatus from acting, and moved to New York. Dualstar has now had retail sales of $1 billion. What could possibly have qualified them for such corporate responsibility, or made them even want it?
Mary-Kate, expert thrower of the stunning conversation stopper, replies, “Well, at that point we had been working eighteen years.”Somebody, get WalMart executives on the line...NOW!!!!!!! Say what you will, but these are tough and smart cookies! Not only do they have a knack for fashion, but their business sense (and surrounding themselves with people who understand their vision) should be applauded!
Ashley Olsen is a single lady. The actress-fashion designer, 24, and her Hangover star beau, Justin Bartha, 32, have parted ways, a source confirms. The private couple, who dated for more than two years, shot down engagement rumors shortly after they got together in 2008. Reps had no comment.
